3D Printing for Beginners: Your First Print in 30 Minutes

From box to first successful print — unboxing, setup, slicing and the benchy ritual.

  1. Unbox, remove zip ties (count them — a missed one jams the gantry), and attach any accessories per the quick-start card.
  2. Level the bed. Every modern printer under $1,000 has automatic leveling; run it anyway.
  3. Load filament: heat the nozzle to PLA temp (210°C), push filament until it extrudes cleanly.
  4. Slice a test model. Download a "benchy" — the boat-shaped calibration classic. Slice at 0.2mm layers, 15% infill.
  5. Watch the first layer. This is 90% of print quality. You want a smooth, slightly squashed line, not a round bead floating or a transparent smear.
  6. Walk away. Come back in 35 minutes to your first boat.
