Our take
The Fuse 1+ 30W is the machine that brought selective laser sintering to workshops and small businesses. A 30 W CO2 laser fuses nylon powder layer by layer, so parts need zero support structures — you nest entire batches of functional components in one 165 x 165 x 300 mm build and fish them out of the powder cake afterwards. Formlabs' ecosystem is the real story: Fuse Sift recovers and mixes unsintered powder, Nylon 12, Nylon 11, glass- and carbon-filled powders and even a flexible TPU are validated for the platform, and service plans plus training are easy to buy alongside. The printer starts at $24,649, but a complete printing-plus-post-processing setup lands closer to $57k — budget accordingly. It is not a desktop appliance: expect a heavy, floor-standing machine (114 kg before powder), manual powder handling, and a workflow that rewards training. For production-grade nylon parts without supports, it remains the reference point every new benchtop SLS is measured against.
Pros
- Most mature benchtop SLS ecosystem: Fuse Sift powder recovery, service plans, training
- No support structures — nest full batches of functional parts per build
- Validated powders: Nylon 12, Nylon 11, PA12 GF, PA11 CF, flexible TPU
- Removable build chamber keeps the machine printing almost nonstop
Cons
- $24.6k for the printer alone; complete setups approach $57k
- Manual powder handling and post-processing are messy and need PPE
- Heavy floor-standing machine with industrial power requirements
Verdict
If your business needs real nylon end-use parts in-house and you can justify the spend, the Fuse 1+ 30W is still the safest benchtop SLS bet on the market.
